The third quarter has seen many economies around the world start to stabilize after a far longer period of disruption and lockdown in the second quarter of 2020. As at September 29th, the number of people worldwide who have died with COVID-19 has passed one million, with many regions still reporting surging numbers of new infections. As expected, the second quarter output figures shown below were worse than the first quarter. China was the only major economy to have produced positive economic growth.

The second quarter has been marked by lower economic activity as a growing number of economies around the world enforced lockdowns to control the spread of COVID-19. At present, there are over 12 million coronavirus cases around the world, with over 545,859 deaths. As demonstrated in the quarterly output figures below, the impact of pandemic on economic activity was considerable in the first quarter of 2020, even though most economies only began introducing lockdown measures in mid-March.

The first quarter of 2020 has been a very challenging period where not only did we face a fall in investment values globally, but more importantly the lives and wellbeing of all individuals have been affected due to the outbreak of COVID-19 pandemic. On March 11, WHO officially declared coronavirus a global pandemic. ‘Social distancing’ is the advice to all, but a number of countries have gone further and pursued the path of a complete lockdown where ‘non-essential’ businesses have been closed. The map below provides a snapshot of key statistics as at 31st March.
